The band was established along side the school in 1949.

Instruction in contemporary marching band, participation in concert, ensemble, and chamber music performances, and the development of soloist skills. The Lamar ISD band is comprised of Lamar Consolidated High School (9-12), Lamar Jr. High (7-8), and Wessendorf Middle School (6). Instrumental music begins in sixth grade with classes that emphasize tonal and rhythmic fundamentals along with the introduction of major scales. Students entering the seventh grade are placed into one of four performing bands where ensemble skills are introduced with the continuation of rhythmic, pulse, articulation, technical, and tonal development. The large ensemble classes also provide students with opportunities to develop solo and ensemble literature.
